Screen Reader and Keyboard Navigation

Our website implements the ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes technique, along with various behavioral changes, to ensure that users who are blind and visit the site with a screen reader can read, understand, and use the site’s features. As soon as a user with a screen reader accesses the site, they immediately receive a prompt to set up their screen reader profile so they can navigate and use the site effectively. Here is how our website meets some of the most important screen reader requirements:

1. Screen Reader Optimization:

We run a process that scans the website’s components from beginning to end to ensure ongoing compliance, even as the website is updated. In this process, we provide screen readers with meaningful data using the ARIA attributes set. For example, we provide accurate labels for forms; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation prompts for form inputs; and element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and more.

In addition, the background process analyzes all images on the website. It generates an accurate and meaningful description based on image object recognition as ALT text (alternative text) for images that do not have one. It also extracts any text embedded within images using OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To enable screen reader adjustments at any time, users simply press the Alt+1 keyboard shortcut.

Screen reader users also receive automatic prompts to activate screen reader mode as soon as they access the website.

These adjustments are compatible with the most widely used screen readers, including JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack.

2. Keyboard Navigation Optimization:

The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML and adds various behaviors using JavaScript to make the website operable via keyboard. This includes navigating the site with the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operating dropdown menus with the arrow keys, closing them with the Escape key, activating buttons and links with the Enter key, navigating between radio buttons and checkboxes with the arrow keys, and selecting them with the spacebar or Enter key.

Additionally, keyboard users will find skip-to-content menus available at any time by pressing Alt+2, or as the first element on the site when navigating with the keyboard. The background process also manages triggered popups by shifting keyboard focus to them as soon as they appear, preventing focus from moving outside.

Users can also use keyboard shortcuts such as "M" (menus), "H" (headings), "F" (forms), "B" (buttons), and "G" (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability Profiles Supported on Our Website

Epilepsy Safe Profile: This profile allows people with epilepsy to use the website safely, eliminating the risk of seizures caused by flashing or blinking animations and dangerous color combinations.

Visually Impaired Profile: This profile adapts the website to be accessible to most visual impairments, such as low vision, tunnel vision, cataracts, glaucoma, and others.

Cognitive Disability Profile: This profile provides various assistive features to help users with cognitive disabilities, such as autism, dyslexia, and cognitive disorders, focus more easily on the essential elements.

ADHD-Friendly Profile: This profile significantly reduces distractions and noise to help people with ADHD and neurodevelopmental disorders browse, read, and focus on the essential elements more easily.

Blind Users Profile (Screen Reader): This profile adapts the website to be compatible with screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen reader is installed on the user’s computer, and this site is compatible with it.

Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor Disabilities): This profile allows people with motor disabilities to use the website using the Tab, Shift+Tab, and Enter keys. Users can also use keyboard shortcuts such as "M" (menus), "H" (headings).

Additional UI, Design, and Readability Adjustments

1. Font Adjustments

Users can increase or decrease font size, change the font family (type), and adjust spacing, alignment, line height, and more.

2. Color Adjustments

Users can select various color contrast profiles, including light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Users can also swap color schemes for headings, text, and backgrounds with over seven different coloring options.

3. Animations

Users with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Interface-controlled animations include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.

4. Content Highlighting

Users can choose to emphasize essential elements such as links and headings. They can also choose to highlight only focused elements or those being hovered over with the mouse.

5. Audio Muting

Users with hearing aids may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playback. This option allows users to mute the entire website instantly.

6. Cognitive Disorders

We use a search engine linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to look up the meaning of phrases, abbreviations, slang, and more.

7. Additional Features

We allow users to change the cursor color and size, use a print mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and access many other features.

Assistive Technology and Browser Compatibility

We aim to support as many browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so that our users can choose the tools that best suit them, with as few limitations as possible.

To that end, we have worked hard to support all major systems representing over 95% of the user market share, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera, and Microsoft Edge, as well as JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), for both Windows and Mac users.

Despite our best efforts to allow anyone to adapt the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or lack a suitable technological solution to make them accessible.
