What is a VPN?

A VPN is a private network that uses a public network (usually the Internet) to connect to devices with private IP addresses from a machine on the LAN or at home. Instead of using a dedicated real connection, such as a dedicated line, a VPN uses "virtual" connections routed via the Internet from the company's private network to the remote device. The VPN tunnel would be used for those who have a private IP address on their SIM cards.
